vgn a115b and firewire hard drive

hi
i don't understand why my hard drive 1394 device doesn't mount on win xp pro? It only recognize my dv camera, and nothing else???
Any ideas?

yes, it's OHCP complient. In fact, i have for IEEE 1394 and USB2 hard drive, they mont in USB2, but not in IEEE 1394. But they all mount with IEEE 1394 on my other computer (desktop). There is only problems with the IEEE1394 of my sony notebook, and only for the hard drive....

You don't say whether your external disk has an external power supply brick or not. You also don't say what USB and Firewire connectors your two PC's and disk pack have.

I recently bought a USB + Firewire 2.5" disk enclosure myself - most I looked at had Type B/4 pin USB port and 6 pin Firewire port. Assuming yours is the same.....

USB ports provide DC power across both type A and B interface connectors whereas the 4 pin Firewire port, typically, found on laptops doesn't supply power - the 6 pin Firewire port does. So from a 6 pin Firewire port typically on a desktop PC the disk gets power but from the 4 pin port typically on a laptop there's no DC power - disk doesn't work

I've also heard of laptop PC's that don't provide power over USB - Dell, for instance!

i have both disks, with and without power supply, it's not the problem. Also, all update have been made. For the connector, of course the notebook have a 4pin firewire, and my hard drive have both pin, 4 and 6, but both don't work. I also have have a comba carbus firewire and usb2 (type II) with 4 and 6 pin firewire, and my hard drive work only with the 6pin firewire...
I think it's a problem of driver, wich is a IEEE 1394 OHCP complient of winxp pro, but is there other driver?

Try reinstalling the drivers for the IEE1394 controller.

Maybe they're not suitable for the iLink port and actually need power running through them.

Am I right in reading the above:

A) Your external drive works when connected to your laptop using the 6pin Firewire port on the PCBus combo Firewire/USB card?
B) But NOT when you use the 4 pin Firewire ports on the card or the laptop's internal port?
C) Have you tried B) with the AC power pack connected to the external drive?

I still think it's a problem that the external disk isn't getting DC power when connected via the 4 pin Firewire connector.

I recently just bought a USB2/Firewire enclosure for a 2.5" 60GB TravelStar disk - I was also getting a few glitches with the Firewire connection but it the problem was power management - I reconfigured power management to ensure it never spins the disks down/puts them into standby mode if the laptop is on AC (I would avoid using the additional disk on battery).

There's a couple of XP hotfixes for Firewire - try a search on MS.
