This seems to be a common problem. It also happend to me and a friend of mine. Have a look at Vaio Village. on ezboard.com. At first I thought that I would be faced with the motherboard replacement cost, which is in the hundreds of pounds range. The actual cost to was £80 and Sony had the laptop returned within 2 weeks. I thought the service in this instance was excellent, however, if this is such a common manufacturing fault, then Sony is liable under the UK Consumer Laws.

In addition to this, since the repair, I now get noise from my speakers when running in power save mode.

The following link seems to offer a good summary of the problem.
http://p200.ezboard.com/funofficialsonyfrm8.showMessage?topicID=3743.topic
