is there anyway to permantly stopwindows messenger 4.7 from comming up, i use msn messenger 6 but if i uninstall 4.7 it no longer lets me use some features, but if i have 4.7 installed i get 2 versions up!!!

Yes there is.
I think you already know this, but here goes:
1. Go to the Administrative Tools section in the Control Panel.
2. Go into Services.
3. Scroll down to Messenger.
4. Double click on Messenger.
5. Change startup type to Disabled.

Sometimes, if you startup Outlook Express, Windows Messenger auto logs on for you. That's because Outlook is associated with Windows Messenger.

If that doesn't work, you can use TweakXP. However, removing Windows Messenger will remove the required components used for online interactions like Remote connection, Whiteboard etc.

I wonder if you could help me with another problem, my computer is not picking autorunning cd's or dvd's, even when i click my computer and double click E: it still opens the folder view, im not sure whats causing this I tried updating my firmware but it didnt fix it.

I'm not sure on this one, but:....
1. Go to My Computer
2. Right-click on your CD/DVD drive
3. Click on Properties.
4. Click on the Autoplay tab on the top.
5. Check to see if the bottom "Prompt me each time to choose an action" is selected.

Try that. If not then I'll recheck it out for ya.

Another way to disable messenger is to rename the the offending EXE file in the messenger folder.
Assuming your two messenger versions are in in different folders this should stop the old one loading.

when you say restart you mean just turning it off and back on...right?? i hate having to use my recovery cd's it takes ages to set it up again afterwards!!

that microsoft site said a fix is comming in the next service pack when is service pack 2 coming out?

Yea of course, restarting means reboot the PC, ie. off and on. Does it still not work after restart? Is this autorun problem ocassional every now and then, or are you stuck with it right now?

For Service Pack 2, it's ready for download directly from Microsoft. However, I recommend you not download it because there maybe some incompatibility issues with some programs. SP2 isn't 100% perfect, there are some minor bugs and flaws in its build. You can if you want stay updated by individual updates you acquire through Windows Update, that'll be enough to secure and maintain your PC's health.
But downloading SP2 right now isn't recommend (for me anyway), unless you have a whole network of computers (like a dozen PCs) which require security/maintenance.

What CD/DVD drive do you have? What model/manufacturer?

it randomly fixed itself... im not complaining, should I disable auto update or is there a way to tell it not to get service pack 2?

No, it's fine, just let Windows auto-update be ON. It won't acquire SP2 unless directly instructed by you. What auto-update does is acquire the main importants updates required for your PC which may mean some from SP2 and some not. You can only download the full SP2 from the downloads section from Microsoft's website. Leaving Windows auto-update ON is the best option, it'll do its job.

Do you want SP2 now? You can download it if you want, but it's not recommended or urgent for anyone to do so, unless you're a big business company. The SP2 is over 230MB large, use a download manager is you must, that is if you intend to get it straight away.

I don't recomend SP2 at the moment, there's a lot of bugs, people having problems right clicking in IE and errors with other applications. Just keep your firewalls and AV up to date.
