has the handycam dcr-sr55 got a 'fade ' option?

Yes - it has Fade to White and Fade to Black.

You will find the setting in the “Options” menu - touch bottom right of screen and select the tab which looks like a screen with a ‘+’ top right.

many thanks for your help. we found the fade sign but bottom right hand side. we got it to fade out but not in. we have seen on internet that there is an 'overlap'. does this give the fade in? or maybe does not have a fade in!

Have a look at Page 74 in the Handicam Handbook for other DCR-SR models - I guess it will be the same for yours.

Select the desired effect in [STBY] (to fade in)

or [REC] (to fade out) mode, then touch OK.
