Have you tried another picture gallery app? Like simply gallery or similar

How about

settings > apps & notifications > See all apps > Album > storage & cache > clear cache > check again and/or restart the phone then check again

Cool tips you have there! you can also force stop the app from the settings and try safe mode too to check the issue while it's on, stopping all installed apps. (Press and hold power key, press and hold on power off from the start up menu, then press Ok to enable it)

Also if the photos are saved in an SD card, try moving them to the phone's memory and see if it makes a difference.
