Based on what you have stated above it sounds like you are attempting to record video in an environment where the sound is well above normal levels (a concert). The microphone is quite small and sensative as it is designed for capturing voice, when exposed to a volume well above those levels you will get distortion.

Please check the above answer by myself. I understand this can be frustrating, however it is operating as normal,, the microphone is designed for phone use and as such will record spoken words fine however is not designed for volumes well above that of the spoken word.

ya it looks like they have used substandard microphone of cheap quality which can't handle noisy sound. Even a chinese smartphone (gionee elife e3) which my wife has records far better sound then xperia sp. The company guys in the showroom doesnot even acknowledge that there is some problem. Company is taking huge money for their mobiles but then people should not buy xperia sony mobiles as it appears that almost every one of them has same problems. They can't record noisy sound. What happpens you go to a party and record video? simply ignore buying this phone until company comes out in public and recalls all the faulty models and replaces the microphone.

[This is not related to the Xperia SP, but it seems the problem is transversal to some Sony mobile phones, so I post my case here. Hope the author of the post doesn't mind ]

Well, I also discovered that 'problem' two or three months ago, but thought it was my hand rubbing on the mic, even though I always thought it was strange because I was always trying to move as little as possible on daily home movies. Last night, while going to a friend's concert I simply discovered it was terrible...

I mean, it can be said that it is 'normal' but, believe me, it is NOT normal!!

I had been in Nokia camp for more than ten years (3310, 7650, 6680 and N97 Mini) and at least the two of them recorded wonderfully (if not the image, but hey that was understandable). Now, what I captured last night with my Sony Xperia L was something between a communication with the dead and someone blowing into the mic... Come on, I spent about 300 euros for that thing, it is not easy-peasy!

IF it is NORMAL then I'll consider changing to some other brand next time around (I bought the Xperia L last september, so I'm somewhat stuck right now). At home I also have a HTC One and a Galaxy S4 (they're my wife's phones) and... they record images ans sounds brilliantly! Sorry... but that excuse ("it is normal") isn't good enough for the 300 euros I gave.:smileysilly:

And make no mistake, I'm very, very satisfied with my Xperia L in other camps. But these little nagging things easily change preferences in a market so crowded like this. But, hey, this is just my opinion. Take it in a good spirit, but seriously.

Cheers!

I suggest that SONY should consider fixing this problem with Kit Kat update. I had xperia ray and the video quality was perfect when shooting videos. There are a lot of mods for the camera but they need root, but they may crash your phone, so its going to be very good for sony to see and fix this problem. The phone is very good but this microphone problem makes him look like.................................

Exactly!! I got the same problem.. to be honest, its really annoying when you spend so much on a handset and you find out these glitches. It so un-sony like. I've always been a sony user & lover regarding any gadget but they have dissapointed me big time. I've always loved sony because of the camera quality and music but the camera of SP is so0 **bleep** poor. I've used Xperia Ray, P, SL previously and i can bet on the fact that the camera isn't functioning normally (as mentioned by the support staff). And on behalf of all of us users out here, i just wanna let him know that we are using smartphones for christ's sake. Does he think we are so dumb? Overall, i love the phone regarding performance, but this camera is so bad. not to mention, the music quality has degraded too(the cheap quality headset proves that). Don't know whether they are going to provide any fix for these but how long can they act like they don't care? :smileyangry::smileyalert:

If they dont do something most of users will start to change their phones with phones with better performance.I had xperia ray and recording video had no problem. I dont know whether the Cyber Shot mod from xda developers will boost the camera but it requers root...

I have just bought an xperia sp not realising how crap the sound quality is when recording video. Can this be fixed by a software update if the microphone is so cheap? If not it's going on eBay and never again Will I buy Sony. No wonder Sony profits have sunk if they are scrimping on components selling crap for a lot of money, consumers are not stupid and will not carry on buying your products. ARE YOU LISTENING SONY?
