To turn on Football mode, you are doing it correct - Turn it on via the button on the remote.
Ive not had this feature demonstrated, however, it does depend on the quality of the audio in the broadcast or video file, the acoustics of the stadium, and how it all compares to the stadium in Brazil (where Sony developed this feature).
As far as I understand it, it just increases the volume (equalisations) of the crowds in the stadium, using some type of post processing technique.
